EXTRA CURRICULAR

Chess Club
Chess club is held at lunch time once per week. A chess coach is employed to teach chess to interested children in years one to seven.
Lessons are one hour in duration and cost $5.00 per week.
During terms 2 and 4 children compete in a chess tournament. Winners receive trophies and medals.
Certificates of encouragement are presented regularly on our school assembly.

Extension Chess Club
More advanced chess players participate in extension chess. A second chess coach is employed to develop skills in chess beyond our regular program.
Extension chess is held on an alternate lunchtime to chess club.
Lessons are one hour in duration and cost $5 per week.
Extension chess students also participate in a tournament in terms 2 and 4. Some students occasionally form teams to compete in external competitions.

Science Club
One afternoon per week interested students participate in science club.
Science Club runs from 3pm - 4pm and costs $2 per week. Participant numbers are limited.

Maths Challenge
Each year teachers of years 4 to 7 nominate their highest achieving maths students to participate in Maths Challenge.
Teams of four students (years 4 and 5, years 6 and 7 combined) work together to negotiate and solve maths problems.
Maths Challenge is held twice per term in school time. It is coordinate by an extension teacher employed by our school. Three maths problems are downloaded from the Internet. Teams have 2 hours to solve all three problem and return solutions via email to the Challenge organisers for marking.

Brookfield Challenge
Based on the Tournament of Minds concept, Brookfield State School holds an annual Brookfield challenge.
During term 2 interested children in years 4 to 7 participate in role-play; problem solving; quizzes; mime; brain tease and public speaking activities during lunchtime one day per week.
During term 3 the children form teams and work with one of three teachers to write a script and perform a play as a solution to one of a number of Challenge problems.
Teams perform at a school Challenge evening at the end of term 3. Students, parents and staff are invited to attend. Teams are judged on a set criteria.
Winning teams are awarded trophies and medals.

School Choirs
Brookfield State School has three choirs. Junior choir (years1, 2 and 3); Intermediate choir (years 4 and 5) and Senior choir (years 6 and 7).
Rehearsals are either before school or during lunch periods.
Choirs are voluntary and not auditioned. The choirs are supported by an employed accompaniest and three different conductors lead the choirs.

Instrumental Music
Instrumental music tuition is available for stringed instruments and brass, woodwind and percussion.
Lessons are free of charge and held during school time.
An instrument hire fee and music charge is included.
A commitment to an ensemble or band is required and rehearsals of these groups are generally held before school.

French Classes
Alliance Francais conducts French classes after school one day per week. Children in years 3 to 7 are invited to participate.
Each lesson is of 1 hour duration and costs approximately $10 per lesson.

Writers Club
Each year teachers of children in years 4 to 7 identify interested, capable writers to participate in writers club.
Writers Club is held one lunchtime per week. Our school funds visits and coaching by published writers who work with the children.

Extension Support
An Extension Teacher is employed two days per week to work with classroom teachers to plan and implement opportunities in classrooms to extend more able students.

Science Teacher
A specific focus on science is offered throughout the school.
Some wonderful, hands on experiences are provided (eg: Exploration and analysis of Moggill Creek).

Recreation and Leisure Program
In Semester 2 each year, children in years 4 to 7 are given the opportunity to participate in a recreation and leisure program as an alternative to interschool sport.

Robotics
A Robotics program has been implemented to enhance student use and knowledge of computer software and programming.
Year 5, 6 and 7 students build Robots and program instructions for the robots through computers.

Courses for Kids
Brookfield After School Care provides a "Courses for Kids" program each term. The activities vary each term and are all held in the school grounds.
